Good morning heads, teachers, and our dear fellow students. The theme of this week is educating ourselves. Therefore, our topic for today’s flag raising speech is the approach of self-education.
To begin with, what is self-education?
Self-education is education without the guidance of institutions. Generally, self-learners are individuals who choose the contents they will study, the studying materials to use, as well as their own study pace and time. Self-education is a very effective method of education. It can help us improve our consciousness, cognition, self-confidence, and self-esteem, thereby enabling us to achieve the ultimate goal.
A good way to educate and improve ourselves is by reading. The ability to read – “literacy”, is recognized by our parents, teachers, and schools, as one of the highest priorities in early education. It is a priority shared not only within China, but also shared by the entire global community of which we are a part. This is because literacy and reading enable people to take ownership of their own education.
Reading in school is what enables us to learn about our various subjects and disciplines. It teaches us vocabulary for language, as well as concepts and terminology for our other subjects. School textbooks are filled with information that help us pass tests and specialize in these subjects. This is a practical use of reading but not the only one we are speaking about today.
Reading books about history, can teach us about humanity’s successes and mistakes, as well as human nature and tendencies. Understanding
this helps us to not repeat the same mistakes. Reading biographical books based on the lives of successful people can teach us about character and what it takes to succeed in the real world. These are just some examples of the benefits of reading, in addition to the cultural enrichment of oneself from exposure to literature, and art.
Unfortunately, while learning to read seems an easy task in hindsight, it is a difficult habit to cultivate. These days, with phones, internet, and social media at our fingertips, it is hard to pick up a book and resist the temptation presented by these technologies. It is up to us to push ourselves to read. So what can we do to cultivate a reading habit.
Let’s designate a time in the day or a few in the week that you can commit to reading. Turn off your phone and social media devices and store them somewhere out of sight for no distractions. Share a book you like with your friends, or perhaps choose to read the same book together so that you have a shared interest to discuss among yourselves.
It is up to us to enrich our minds and develop our futures. By ensuring we read we will continue to improve our lives and humanity as a whole.
Thank You All.
