Good morning, dear teachers and fellow students. Our topic for the flag-raising speech today is to convince people virtuously.
The ancients said, when you encounter a crafty and deceitful person, you should touch him with your sincere heart. When you encounter a man who is violent and surly, try to temper him with gentleness. When you encounter people who behave selfishly, you should encourage them to change with righteousness and integrity. We live in a world of great variety, where every person has their unique personalities and emotions. But with such vast variety, comes conflict. This is why treating others with sincerity and convincing others virtuously is an important principle to keep in mind. The Earth is such a compact space to contain billions of souls, therefore it is important to treat others in a sincere and virtuous manner to seek for relatively balanced and harmonic relationships between people.
Liu Bei, a famous warlord and philosopher in the Three Kingdoms Period once said to his son: ‘Never do the evil because of its insignificance, and never refuse to do the good because of its insignificance’. The smallest of goods can accumulate to be great contributions to those around you. No good is not worth doing! Even if the actions from others are harming you, being able to understand their faults and encourage them to change for good in a sincere manner is a core value of the concept of ‘convincing people virtuously’. Remember, for the people who persuade others with oppressive manners, there will be resistance. However, when you win people by virtue, they will be convinced and willing to change.
Striving to always take the high road when dealing with others is an important principle. It has been, and it still is. History affords us lessons, and so do people. Let us remember the code of ethics and be an upright person.
